Coláiste Mhuire’s fourth league match was away to
Clifden Community School on Wednesday, February 4th 2015. After a
long two and a half hour journey, our boys were keen to get their legs moving
and it wasn’t very long before they knew their opponents were there for the
taking. The team was well marshaled and driven on by team captain Sam O’Sullivan,
who insisted upon working on set moves and using the space to move Clifden
about. The final score-line 50-5 in favour of Coláiste Mhuire, does not
actually reflect the hard work which the boys put in throughout the entire
game. With points difference relevant in this competition it was vital to keep
the pressure on to the end. Well done Mr. Curran and boys!!

Athletics-
Schools Cross Country
Coláiste Mhuire had 31 runners this year competing in
the South Connacht Cross-Country races held in Bushfield, Loughrea on
Wednesday, January 29th 2015. Freezing cold weather with sleet and
snow meant that there was very little scope for any long warm-ups and,
conditions for running were less than favourable. Coláiste Mhuire’s minor girl’s
team consisting of Oonagh Kelly, Katelyn Keegan, Izzy Daly, Saoirse Ward and
Sinead Langan qualified in 4th position on 70 points. Adam Farrell (First
Year), ran a strong race in the minor boy’s category and finished 6th
overall, qualifying as an individual. While Gerard Mc Guinness (Second Year)
finished in a respectable 14th place in the junior boy’s event.
Congratulations to Mr. Curran and all who competed and, best of luck to those
who qualified and will be heading to Sligo for the Connacht finals after
midterm.
Green-Schools
in Coláiste Mhuire, Ballygar
The Green-Schools Committee in Coláiste Mhuire,
Ballygar, are well on their way to earning their 6th Green flag,
this time for the Global Citizenship, Litter & Waste theme. This theme covers
the topic of Litter and Waste again, this time looking at the impact of Litter
and Waste on the planet. Students also look at the links we all have with the
rest of the world.
On Tuesday last, the committee met with Mr. Mark
Molloy, Environmental Officer of Galway County Council. He spoke with the
students about “Food Miles”. Students learned about the way our consumer
choices have an impact on the planet.
“Food Miles” means the distance the food travels to get to our plate
first of all, and then how the waste is disposed of.
We should aim to consume what is grown locally, but
also buy Fairtrade products where
possible, and all of us can make sure we don’t buy too much, in other words not
waste food. As our grandparents used to
say “Waste not, want not”!
The school and committee were also assessed to see if
that coveted Green Flag was earned – and we are quietly optimistic! Well done
Ms. Casey and, your eager Green schools team!
