St. Brigid's Crosses

As the first of February approached, last week's religion classes took a practical twist when our students practiced the art of weaving St. Brigid's crosses. Room 11 was a hive of activity and fun as students eagerly wove the traditional Irish cross. It is believed that while St. Brigid was tending to a dying man, she picked up the rushes from the floor and wove them into the cross. While doing this she explained to the dying man the meaning of Christianity and he converted to Christianity before his passing.
Thank to the students who brought in the rushes and to those who helped out in passing on their knowledge of how to make them.

Catholic Schools Week
Last week also marked Catholic Schools week. This year's theme was "Called to Serve”. We celebrated the week with a thought for the day which highlighted the key words: Self, Eucharist, Rite of God, Vocation and Evangelization as well as having a reminder in our Sacred Space.

Green-Schools monitoring in Coláiste Mhuire
This year, as every year, students from Ballygar check their water and energy usage over an entire week.  Students and staff are reminded to be aware of the need to conserve both at home and in school.  We strive to live as sustainably as possible, which will be good for the planet and good for our pockets.
Students are also working hard in many subjects to discover the links that we have with many countries in the world, as part of the Global Citizenship, Litter and Waste programme for Green-Schools.

Junior Football
Coláiste Mhuire Junior team took on their near neighbours and friends in St. Cuan's in a knockout game on Monday. Coláiste Mhuire was forced to make a number of changes owing to injuries with Niall Hynes, Pierce McDonagh, James Corbett all playing great games, in these positional switches.
We had many goal chances but the Cuan's keeper was outstanding, making a number of tremendous saves. Unfortunately, it was not to be our day and we ended up losing the match by a single point.
