Silver
for our Under 14 Girls Badminton team.
On Friday the 13th of February, our Under 14 Girls Badminton team travelled to
the Galway Tennis Club in Salthill to compete in the Connacht Schools Badminton
tournament. Coláiste Mhuire emerged victorious over several schools from around
Connacht. Following the semi-final
between Coláiste Mhuire and St. Nathy’s Ballaghaderreen we were through to the
final against the Convent of Mercy, Roscommon. After the tense and thrilling
final it came down to points difference with Coláiste Mhuire, Ballygar scoring
104 points, while the Convent of Mercy, Roscommon scored 110. Well done to our exceptional team: Katelynn
Keegan, Sinead Langan, Izzy Daly, Caoimhe Mc Carthy, Emily Mizia, Saoirse Ward,
Lydia Zwierczyk and Kerrie Small. Thank you to Mrs. Flanagan, Mr. Curran and
Ms. Beirne for their involvement.
New
Brown Food Bin in Coláiste Mhuire
The Green-Schools programme deals with the
problem of Litter and Waste and its impact on the planet. For this reason, Coláiste Mhuire, Ballygar,
has now added a Brown Bin to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. As we learnt from Mr Mark Molloy, the
Environmental Officer from Galway County Council, there is currently no
landfill site (dump) in County Galway at all, which means we export our waste
to other counties in the country. The brown bin takes all organic waste, food,
garden waste, sawdust etc and deals with it in an environmentally friendly
way. This year students will also assist
Tidy Towns and take part in the annual Spring Clean, helping to keep Ballygar
tidy. Again, students in Coláiste Mhuire
lead the way in caring for the planet.
Vive
la France!
Our students whetted their appetites
and sampled some typical French delicacies before the mid-term break, namely,
Roquefort, Brie and Camembert cheese. It certainly awakened the taste buds of
those with a more refined palate! Mademoiselle Jeanne Quiniou explained the
origin of the cheese. This was a cross curricular exercise linking up with the
Home Economics and Geography departments. Not to be outdone the P.E
department under the tutelage of Mr. Curran and Jeanne taught our First and
Second Years some Breton dances. These are all excellent learning experiences
for our students as they learn about French culture. We would like to thank
Jeanne our French assistante for her creativity and enthusiasm with all of
these projects. Vive la France!

guidance and direction of Mr. Kevin Staunton, who joined us as a student
teacher in Coláiste Mhuire during the last term. Also, bird feeders,
key-holders and, bird sculptures for windows which will be ‘winging’ their way
to many homes within Ballygar and the Coláiste Mhuire catchment area in the
coming days.
