Connacht
Post-Primary SHC 'C' Barry Burke Semi-Final
Coláiste Mhuire 1-10
Ballyhaunis CS 3-13
Coláiste Mhuire's Senior Boys team were
defeated by a much better Ballyhaunis CS in the Connacht Hurling Semi-Final on
February 14th in Tuam Stadium. Ballyhaunis started brightly and raced into a
0-6 to 0-1 lead after the first 15 minutes. This was in no small part due to
the excellence of their free-taker, Sean Kenny. He landed some excellent long
range frees and punished Ballygar every time for defensive mistakes. As half
time approached Ballygar began to improve and indeed John Donoghue was unlucky
not to have a goal with five minutes remaining. John had the keeper beaten but
the corner back for Ballyhaunis, Conor Hunt, was on the goal line to save a
definite goal. The half time score was 0-9 to 0-5 in favour of
Ballyhaunis.
After the restart Ballyhaunis scored two
quick points and then Simon Thomas scored a goal for Ballygar, after a lovely
individual effort. Indeed Simon had an excellent game overall scoring 1-7, 1-4
from play. However Ballyhaunis responded immediately with a goal of their own
and then another goal to effectively see of the contest. Ballyhaunis were
deserved winners but the Ballygar boys definitely didn't play to their full
potential.
Well done to all involved with the team, mentor Ms. O'Malley and, especially to the Leaving Certificate students on their last match representing the school community.
